'BUY A BRICK AND HELP TO BUILD AN ORPHANAGE'

Many of the pressures faced by children in Kathmandu are also evident in Kalimpong. There is much poverty and the mortality rate is dramatically higher than we are used to in the UK. This often means that children are forced to fend for themselves or exist as part of a very extended family. Each child in this situation is extremely vulnerable to many risks and our Hornbeam Project is being welcomed by the local community where social care is almost non-existent.

We set up a rented children's care home in Kalimpong, Northern India and provided clean water to a local community in need.

secured a suitable rented property in Kalimpong, made the necessary changes and furnished it to local standards. We also appointed a qualified care assistants and live-in managers and now 10 children are settled there.

We have now reached the stage where the lease on the rented home is due to finish in October 2010 and we have committed ourselves to building a purpose built childrens' home in Kalimpong.

Our target is to raise £100,000 to purchase the land and build the home.

If you would like to 'buy a brick' for £5 and help this project along please send a cheque, made out to 'NEW FUTURES NEPAL' and send it c/o Colin Culley, Mount Cottage, Lockton, Pickering, North Yorkshire, YO18 7QB.

Alternatively, you could make a payment on line.

Hornbeam Water Project

Great news, another of our targets achieved!!

We are delighted to report that this February we have achieved another target which was to bring a fresh water supply to a Primary school in Bong Busty.

Hornbeam Water, installing clean water at the Deaurali Primary School in Bong Busty Village.

The task here was to lay 1,000 metres of pipe-work from a clean-water source down to the Deaurali Primary School in the extended mountain village of Bong Busty.  The water project is costing in the region of £3,000 and was sponsored by NEW FUTURES NEPAL, again generously backed by Hornbeam Ivy Ltd.

Having clean running water at the school will help transform both the health and hygiene of each of the children and the general facilities that can now be offered as part of the school’s curriculum.
