S Harrison Developments Ltd, one of Yorkshire’s most successful property and development companies, is delighted to be supporting the work of New Futures Nepal.

For the company’s current chairman Martyn Harrison the link up with the charity has an extra poignancy.  His late father, Stanley Harrison, who founded the company in 1952, fought alongside the Ghurkhas in Burma in World War 2.

The Harrison Group has long-standing links with the Yorkshire community.  Until recently the company was based in Malton, just a stone’s throw from the grounds of Castle Howard – venue for the 2008 trek for children in Nepal.

Following the sale of its construction operation in 2007, the company moved to new headquarters at The Chocolate Works – the former Terry’s factory site in York.  Now it undertakes development projects across the UK, providing homes, offices industrial units, shopping centres, educational buildings and student accommodation.  Its current flagship project is Friarsgate, the £100 million mixed use, leisure and retail redevelopment in Lichfield.

Harrison is backing NFN with a £10,000 donation.  But rather than use the money directly for projects in Nepal, Harrison is committing the funds to stage a major sponsored event – The Harrison Trek for children in Nepal - which it is hoped will raise even more funds, year on year.

The event will take place on midsummer’s day next year – June 21st 2008 - in and around the grounds of Castle Howard.  Plans are already well underway for the sponsored event which will involve a range of walks – from 2 to 15 miles long – all finishing at the home of the Howard family, famous as the setting for the acclaimed TV adaptation of Brideshead Revisited.

Schools, colleges, social groups and businesses are all being asked to participate in what promises to be a great family fun day, with a theme which promotes “care for yourself, care for others”.

Says Martyn Harrison: “We have been thoroughly impressed with the work of New Futures Nepal and the very tangible benefits that it delivers, with care, compassion and the minimum of fuss and bureaucracy.  We’re delighted to be associated with the charity and hope that its many friends and supporters will take part in the Harrison Trek.”
